Information about Individual Horses:
Unconditional- 16 hh 1 ins, 15-year-old TB mare. Forward going and responsive horse, with a great jump and lovely paces. Suits experienced riders as she is an athletic and powerful horse. Good mouth and is great for dressage, show jumping and safaris.
Maya- 16hh, 10-year-old TB mare. A dark bay mare, Maya is an extremely attractive horse. She is forward going with a lovely mouth, and enjoys jumping. She suits an experienced rider and is very comfortable and responsive.
Leeward- 16hh 1 ins, 18-year-old TB mare. Leeward is a forward going ex-race horse with active paces. She is a nice dressage horse and show jumper, who does really well as an advanced riders hack. She does not often go on safari as she finds it hard to keep weight on under stress.
Birthday Boy- 16 hh, TB x Polo pony 3-year-old gelding. BB is a people loving, affectionate horse who is just coming into his own. Extremely sensible and relaxed, he has fantastic paces and is a lovely ride. Due to his age he needs an experienced rider who gives him his head and does not get in his way. He has just started to learn to jump.
Zulu- 15hh 2 ins, 6-year-old Boerped gelding. Often used Patrick’s guide horse, Zulu is a scopey, athletic horse. He enjoys being near the front of the ride and is extremely confident over jumps and around game. He needs an experienced rider to really enjoy his full range of potential.
Mshale- 15hh 3 ins, 6 year-old Boerped gelding. A very handsome horse, Mshale is well suited to intermediate or advanced riders. He has a wonderfully comfortable canter and a very sensible and kind temperament. A perfect safari horse.
Mawingu- 15hh, 5-year-old Boerped gelding. Mawingu is a very sweet and straight forward horse who suits intermediate to advanced ladies. He has small paces but a lovely way of going and a soft mouth. He has a good jump and a great temperament.
Mwezi- 15hh 2 ins, 6-year-old Boerped gelding. Often used as Nicola’s guide horse, Mwezi is an extremely capable and comfortable horse. He has fabulous paces and does not mind being at the back or the front. He prefers to be ridden on a loose rein and likes a sensitive rider who does not pull him around too much.
Shaba- 15hh 2 ins, 5-year-old Boerped gelding. Fast becoming a favourite here, Shaba is a lovely ride for intermediate and advanced riders. He is very easy-going and likes to be ridden on a loose rein. A great temperament and forward going paces.
Sambu- 15hh, 7-year-old Boerped gelding. Sambu is a sturdy horse with a wonderful safe temperament. A very friendly and reliable horse, he is used often for any rider from beginner to advanced. A great safari horse with bags of personality.
Yo-Yo- 15hh 1 ins, 14 year old TB X Somali gelding. Yo-Yo is a sweet beginner-intermediate horse who does most of the lodge rides. Used to the job and the game, Yo-Yo has taught many beginners how to ride.
Trailblazer- 15hh 2 ins, 11-year-old TB gelding. Trailblazer is also a beginner-intermediate horse. He does many of the lodge rides also. He is capable of being a good fun horse for safaris but also looks after any novice impeccably. A little lazy with beginners but otherwise lovely.
Orion- 13hh 2 ins, 14 year old Somali pony gelding. A saint of a pony, Orion is a great child’s horse and can also be a fun ride for light ladies. He is sensible but forward going and very experienced at the job. A stable favourite.
Hagenia-12 hh 2 ins, 8 year old Somali pony mare. Hagenia is a sweet pony, who is great for children. Like Orion, she is sensible and safe but enthusiastic. We have her foal, Bella, who is two years old and about to broken in. She will probably reach 13hh 2 ins.
Seiya-13hh 1 ins, 12 year old Somali pony mare. Seiya is a forward going fun pony who is suited to advanced children or teenagers. She loves to jump and be up near the front.
Little Sammy-12hh, 14-year-old Somali pony gelding. Sammy is a great ride for small children. Used to doing many of the lodge rides, Sammy is an easy going pony who is good to lead. Not as keen as Orion and Hagenia he is not used often on safari as he does not walk out as well the other ponies.
Bella- 14hh, 3 year old Somali pony. Bella is a stunning little pony, who has great gaits and a lovely temperament. An ideal ride for kids and light adults, she is just getting into work with Ride Kenya. She was born in the Chyulus, so is very relaxed in her surroundings.
Type of tack used: Most of our horses are ridden in snaffle bridles and Wintec general purpose saddles. We also have some South African trail rider saddles, a hybrid between English and western which are great for safaris and also beginners.
Our horses are trained to respond to a direct rein and leg aids, rather than to neck reining. Whilst all of our horses are well-schooled, we recommend that guests ride on a looser rein most of the time. This allows the horse to see where he is going over uneven terrain and is easier on the horse for long periods of time.
